Your Monday SITREP

Share This: (U.S. Air Force photo/Staff Sgt. Michael Ellis) The Arab Weekly makes a fair point in this article about how Israeli attacks on Iranian shipping reveal that Iran is incapable of confronting Israel directly. There are limits to a right to protest. Breaking into a nuclear submarine base got this protester a 21-month prison term. Good. Watch the Littoral Combat Ship, USS Charleston live-fire a SeaRAM missile. This may not seem like a big deal but the ability to bolt on an integrated air and missile defense system to the LCS class ships is one of the things their design was intended for. Like a swiss army knife, it has the ability to quickly reconfigure itself for special missions.

China Sets World Record For Deep-Sea Drilling In Disputed South China Sea – Investment Watch

China has set a world record for deep-sea drilling in the South China Sea, Chinese state media reported, while tensions in the disputed area are rising. According to the Xinhua news agency, Chinese scientists aboard a marine research vessel drilled on Wednesday 2,060 meters (6758 feet) under the seabed to obtain a sediment core. China’s drilling system Sea Bull II is the world’s only seabed drilling equipment with a drilling capacity of more than 200 meters (656 feet), and it could help the country to explore natural gas hydrate resources, Xinhua says. China has said in recent years it has successfully extracted gas from gas hydrates, also known as ‘fire ice’ or ‘flammable ice’, including in parts of the South China Sea.

US urged to stick to one-China principle--China Economic Net

China urged the United States on Thursday to properly and prudently handle issues related to Taiwan and stop sending wrong messages to Taiwan separatists, otherwise it will gravely compromise its own interests as well as peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits.   Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said at a news briefing on Thursday afternoon in Beijing that the US should fully understand the sensitive nature of the Taiwan question and stick to the one-China principle and the three Sino-US joint communiques.   The US has recently sent seriously misleading signals to Taiwan separatists and posed threats to peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits by repeatedly deploying its warships and conducting provocative acts in the straits, Zhao said.
