Every San Antonian who has lived here since 1968 has a story about the UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures. Those stories are likely to be more emotional and personal than memories of other cultural institutions in town.
Hundreds of thousands of people traipsed through the institute’s doors as children, and millions more have attended its Texas Folklife and Asian festivals. Over the years, tourists have made ITC a top destination, too.

I spent April 3 photographing COVID testing preparations. The health-care center had painted lines 6 feet apart and the staff had PPE, before masks were in wide public use. On the drive home, in Blauvelt, I saw a circle of women standing in the rain. I stopped and, when I got close, saw they were reciting the Rosary. After their last Amen, they walked back to their houses. Their church, St. Catharine s Church, had been closed by the coronavirus, one told me. Their quiet prayer in the rain under towering trees was a stark contrast to the health center where they were busy finding ways to make things work.

SANTA MONICA/MALIBU On December 9, the Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District held a board meeting to discuss the facilities Improvement Projects. The plan of action will call for using $98 million of measure SMS funding for the first round of renovations towards Santa Monica elementary and middle schools.
As a dedicated team has stated that three major moves will take place during this time. New buildings will be built at Rogers, McKinley, and Roosevelt elementary schools. Minor medium size moves will be made to Grant and Franklin elementary schools to help improve in facilities. While smaller improvements will be made to John Adams and Lincoln middle school.
