Book tells remarkable story of pioneer Australian aviator Jim Hazelton
What motivates a pilot to sit in the cockpit of a light aircraft for days, overloaded with fuel, alone over a vast ocean? Discover the remarkable story of gifted Australian aviator, the late Jim Hazelton, on Thursday 3 June.
Central West Libraries will host the launch of ‘Jim Hazelton Born to Fly’ by Mark Nelson, which tells of the life of the first Australian to fly the Pacific solo in a single-engine aircraft in 1964.

Orange Mayor Reg Kidd said the Hazelton name was synonymous with aviation in the Central West, with Jim and brother Max founding Hazelton Airlines, which operated from 1953 to 2001.
If you’re new to Orange, Orange City Council wants to shout you lunch.
Council is hosting a free lunch for anyone who has moved to the Orange region in the last year and a half.
Orange Mayor Reg Kidd said moving to a new city can be daunting but a free lunch for new residents was on Sunday May 30 to help make the transition a little easier.
“The welcome lunch is an easy point of contact for people who have moved here and want to meet people in similar situations, or want to get a bit more local knowledge from Council staff.

Orange artists will also be among the next round of artworks to be installed later this year.
Orange Mayor Reg Kidd said he’s looking forward to seeing what emerges as the artwork takes shape.
“Yanni Pounartzis is a Canberra-based artist who’s exhibited in Berlin and Sydney as well as created public artworks in Canberra, and it’s fantastic that a street in Orange will be the next backdrop for his work,” Cr Reg Kidd said. “People who follow his work closely say he has a style of painting that plays with perspective and colour.”
