Free turkey dinners to be provided to more than 400 DeSoto County families Community Submitted The Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota and DeSoto Counties and the Louis and Gloria Flanzer Philanthropic Trust are partnering to provide a complete holiday meal to DeSoto County families in need on Dec. 23.  The groups will distribute more than 400 full holiday meals, which include a precooked turkey and all of the sides, in the Louis and Gloria Flanzer Boys & Girls Club parking lot, 18 School Avenue, Arcadia, from 2 p.m. to 6 a.m. Preregistered families from the Louis and Gloria Flanzer Boys & Girls Club, Arcadia Housing Authority, Redlands Christian Migrant Association, Casa San Juan Bosco and seniors at St. John Paul II Villas will participate in the drive-thru donation event.

LAKELAND Lourdes Villanueva’s phone began ringing even before she had learned about the latest development in the saga of the “Dreamers.” As director of farmworker advocacy for the Redlands Christian Migrant Association in Mulberry, Villanueva has connections with local youths who fit the criteria for a program created under former President Barack Obama that provides protections for those illegally brought to the United States as children. Villanueva has seen Polk County students benefit from the Deferred Action for Children Arrivals (DACA) program, but the opportunity hasn’t existed for others in recent years. Within months of taking office in 2017, President Donald Trump announced that he would suspend the program, prompting a series of court challenges.
