Redwings Horse Sanctuary begins their move to Paso Robles

This week’s equine moving team: Redwings Equine Care Manager Sara Ruggerone, Ranch Foreman Jorge Padilla, and Trainer Melissa Clay. –Redwings Horse Sanctuary, a nonprofit horse rescue founded in Carmel in 1991, began the long-anticipated move of their 70+ equine residents from Lockwood to their new permanent home in Paso Robles this week. This journey started in 2015, with a generous trust bequest making the purchase of 141 acres at 6875 Union Road a reality. The property at Union Road was formerly Thompson Ranch, a pistachio grove and farm established in 1971. The purchase of the property necessitated the removal of all the remaining trees, as pistachio leaves, nuts and seedlings can be toxic to horses. During the intervening years, work has been devoted to safely fencing the property, creating 18 pasture areas, digging additional wells, adding electricity, and building structures such as an office, a hay barn, 2 mare motels, and a medical barn, which are necessary for the hea

International horse movements play role in spread of strangles, researchers find

Researchers said they identified many examples of closely related strains of  Streptococcu equi in geographically distant nations, highlighting that the lack of pre-export testing, used routinely for many animal diseases, facilitates what they describe as the unbridled international transmission of the bacterium.

Strangles, caused by the bacteria  Streptococcus equi, is the most frequently diagnosed infectious disease of horses, with 600 outbreaks estimated to occur in the United Kingdom each year. Streptococcus equi invades the lymph nodes of head and neck of horses, causing them to swell and form abscesses that can, in around 2% of cases, literally strangle the horse to death. Some of the horses that recover from strangles remain persistently infected. These apparently healthy animals shed bacteria into the environment and spread the disease to other horses that they come into contact with. Using standard diagnostic testing, the  Streptococcus equi strains look almost identical. But by carefully examining the DNA of the bacteria, the team were able to track different variants as they spread across the world.

Ambassadors sought to help raise strangles awareness

Horse & Hound Trending: Credit: Lucy Merrell The organisations behind Strangles Awareness Week are looking for ambassadors to help promote awareness of the disease on social media and tackle the stigma attached to outbreaks. The annual initiative will take place this year from 3-9 May and aims to provide horse owners, yard managers, vets and equine professionals with a platform to share their own stories and promote support for those affected by the disease. The campaign is a combined effort from the British Horse Society, Intervacc, Keeping Britain’s Horses Healthy, Redwings Horse Sanctuary, Scotland’s Rural College’s Premium Assured Strangles Scheme (PASS), Surveillance of Equine Strangles (SES), The (Dick) Royal School of Veterinary Studies and World Horse Welfare.
