A devastating outbreak linked to the British variant of COVID-19 at a long-term care home north of Toronto has now infected just more than 300 individuals, heightening fears of community spread.
Ninety “household members” – a broad group that includes family of people who live or work at Roberta Place in Barrie, Ont., as well as staff from local hospitals, paramedic services and other community agencies helping manage the outbreak –
have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, said Charles Gardner, Medical Officer of Health at the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, in an interview on Wednesday.
All but one of the home’s 128 residents have been sickened with the virus, along with 86 staff members.

In a noon-hour press release issued on Dec. 23, the County of Renfrew vows it is doing all it can to protect residents from COVID-19 which includes continuing to operate its essential services.
“The County of Renfrew along with local municipalities, and the Renfrew County and District Health Unit, and Renfrew County Virtual Triage Centre are continuing to work collectively to ensure that all measures are being taken to protect our residents, and staff during this difficult time,” the release reads. “The County of Renfrew remains committed to providing services to our residents in a timely and efficient manner during the continuing pandemic.”
The City of Pembroke is trilled to announce that Santa will be making a special trip through the neighbourhoods of Pembroke on December 19
th starting at 4 p.m. Santa will be driving around the streets of Pembroke wishing everyone happy and safe holidays and can be seen from the ends of drive-ways and through front windows.
A map will be released in the coming days showing the route that Santa will be taking throughout the community. The Pembroke Fire Department will be leading the way so watch out for flashing lights to know Santa is near.
If you are going to watch for Santa outdoors ensure you are respecting Renfrew County District Health Unit guidelines by not gathering with others outside of your household and keeping social distance of 2 meters. Anyone waiting for Santa is also encouraged to stay on the sidewalk or on your lawn to ensure the roads are clear.

The Renfrew County District Health Unit says that one student has tested positive for COVID-19 in connection to the outbreak at Algonquin College in Pembroke. Luckily, all staff and students within this cohort were previously deemed high-risk contacts and had already been given direction to self-isolate and get tested. The college itself remains open for in-person learning. In the meantime, the RCDHU is working closely with Algonquin College to ensure measures continue to be in place to protect all staff and the public.
If you have been directed to self-isolate, you are required to:
