After complaints by some Greenville County residents about the new sculptures downtown, the county s finance committee voted 4-1 to re-allocate funds earmarked for the Hispanic Alliance. The Hispanic Alliance worked with the City of Greenville and fundraised through private sponsors to bring the temporary exhibit to downtown through October. The nine sculptures - six in Falls Park, two outside the Peace Center and one inside - were created by Mexican artist Jorge Marín. And as he trained, he raised $11,150 in about 3 months for Alzheimer s researchHis reason for running - and raising all that money - is personal. “It hits pretty close home for me,” he said, “My mom is living with dementia right now. My grandfather passed away from Alzheimer’s when I was young. So we’re dealing with the day-to-day right now.”According to the South Carolina chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, there are 95,000 South Carolinians living with the disease. Last year, the pandemic challenged many of the nonprofit’s fundraisers.“We typically host large fundraising events like our walk to end Alzheimer s, which takes place each fall. last year we had to take it everywhere not virtual but everywhere so people could walk where they were,” said Beth Sulkowski at the South Carolina Alzheimer s Association in Greenville.
