Woman killed in Helvetia wreck | News, Sports, Jobs

Staff Writer HELVETIA The Randolph County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that a 36-year-old Helvetia woman lost her life after a single- vehicle accident Sunday evening. At approximately 5:19 p.m., Corporal Seth Kyle and Deputy Roger Foster of the Randolph County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to a one-vehicle crash in Helvetia. Once on the scene, law enforcement found a 2011 Toyota Rav 4 over an embankment. The vehicle had apparently lost control and drove off the left side of the roadway edge before striking a large tree, officials said. The driver was extricated from the wreckage by fire units and was later pronounced dead. Her two small children, ages 3 and 5, were also in the vehicle in car seats and suffered only minor injuries.

Staff Writer ELKINS A vehicle and foot pursuit early Thursday morning led to the Randolph County Sheriff’s Department recovering some of the stolen items that were recently taken from YouthBuild North Central. On Thursday at approximately 2:11 a.m., Randolph County sheriff’s deputies Lt. R.K. Swisher and B.M. Roy responded to a possible breaking and entering complaint at the Valley Village Apartments on Ward Road, according to the criminal complaint. Upon the deputies’ arrival, a short vehicle pursuit ensued followed by a foot pursuit and search which led to the arrest of Robert Michael Sparks, 39, of Huttonsville. Sparks was wanted on felony warrants for burglary at the time of his arrest.

A man and woman were arrested after the Randolph County Sheriff s Department found a marijuana grow operation.  Workers at a solar farm being built in the area of 650 South and 400 West fire called police. They complained that there was a person shooting a rifle and they weren t sure if they were being targeted. Deputies went to the home where the shots were fired from and could smell marijuana from outside. Deputies knocked, and when two people came out of the house, deputies could smell marijuana on both of them.

Staff Writer ELKINS The Randolph County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a theft that occurred earlier this week at YouthBuild North Central. The incident occurred between 4:15 p.m. Jan. 25 to 6:20 a.m. Jan. 26 at the organization’s building in Highland Park. During the incident a 2013 Ford Escape was stolen along with a long list of tools from the facility. “Our office responded to YouthBuild on Tuesday for a breaking and entering call,” Randolph County Sheriff Rob Elbon said. “A vehicle and tools were stolen for the property somewhere between late Monday evening to early Tuesday morning. The vehicle has red/maroon county tags on it and the Ford oval on the back is worn and appears to be black from age. There are also some rust spots on the back of the trunk lid.”
