(WECT) - It was a case that came as a shock to many across the Cape Fear region. A well-known police lieutenant and youth football coach, criminally charged following an investigation by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI). The accusation: that Shaun Appler offered a woman a “free pass” to get out of trouble with Wrightsville Beach Police, in exchange for nude photos or sex.

Wrightsville Beach police saved a woman who fell off the top of a parking deck

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH – A woman was saved from falling 40 feet off the top of a parking deck by police during an incident Sunday morning. Wrightsville Beach Police Department officers were summoned to the Shell Island resort shortly before 1 a.m. on Feb. 28 after being notified by a security officer of a woman behaving suspiciously while walking the parking deck, according to a release. When they arrived, the woman seemed apprehensive to trust the first officer to make contact, identified as Sgt. J. Rich. When he approached her, she rolled over the side wall of the top level of the deck. In body cam footage released by WBPD, Rich can be seen walking over to check on her, only to notice she was holding her weight and dangling from the deck.

Open records laws help rebuild WPD s internal report, which was significantly truncated this year

- Since 2008, the Wilmington Police Department has annually released a report from its Internal Affairs division (after 2016 known as the Professional Standards division). Traditionally, these reports are released in the spring or early summer, and have been two to four dozen pages, containing a number of data sets and infographics. The 2019 report was quietly released in mid-October. It was just four pages long and wasn t posted along with the past decade of other reports (it was posted as a news item on the department s website, here). The report was largely good news for the department, showing a decrease in citizen complaints and allegations, and an decrease in sustained investigations (after a spike in 2018).
