By Steve Bailey We should not push for the loss of railroad infrastructure, but trails preserve disused rights of way for future generations. Multiuse paths blend the line between transportation corridors and recreation. Besides improving urban areas, more expansive rail trails continue to connect nearby communities long after the rails are pulled. Rail trails as a teaching tool can be seen taking shape around Charleston. In an area rich with Civil War history, some connections between that event and the built landscape can be made through plaques and other signs. Spurred by booming development, the story of an antebellum railroad is being shared with a new generation along the West Ashley Greenway.

Didcot s Play2Give founder to be awarded MBE

A BRAIN injury survivor who made it his mission to raise thousands of pounds for brain injury and children’s hospital charities, will now, after almost two decades of fundraising receive an honour from the Queen. Andrew Baker, 32 lives in Didcot and he is the founder and CEO of Play2Give, the Oxfordshire fundraising organisation. Mr Baker was born with a brain injury and was cared for since birth, he then suffered a head injury at the age of eight which resulted in him needing further treatment and later surgery at the age of 12. It was this background and a campaign launched by the Oxford Mail to get the Oxford Children’s Hospital built that propelled Mr Baker into fundraising.

Savannah-area organizations pay it forward with charitable gifts during the holidays

Over 100 gifts donated to Savannah’s Union Mission For over 25 years, the Savannah College of Art and Design has partnered with Savannah’s Union Mission to provide presents for children and their families while they are either experiencing homelessness or struggling to provide for themselves. This year SCAD donated clothing, toys, books, electronics, bicycles, and more to these families in need, spreading some much needed holiday cheer. A donation of $1,000 to Backpacks of Love For the second year in a row, the Dewitt Tilton Group supported Backpacks of Love’s fight to eliminate hunger among school-aged children living in Bryan County by donating $1,000 toward their cause. Along with providing this funding, Dewitt Tilton Group employees also lent a hand in assembling food packages that were provided to underprivileged schoolchildren and their families.
