The owner was bringing items from the supermarket inside their home on the 300 block of White Street when the vehicle was stolen by the teen around 11:30 p.m., Barnes and Ruotolo said. The teen led police on a brief pursuit into Elizabeth, which ended with the accused thief in custody minutes later, authorities said.

The teen, whose name and hometown were not released, also has been charged with juvenile complaints for eluding police, endangering the welfare of a child and resisting arrest. Roselle police were dispatched around 11:30 p.m. Thursday to a home on the 300 block of White Street on a report of a stolen vehicle with a child inside. Investigators learned the vehicle owner had just arrived home and was bringing items inside when the 16-year-old allegedly took the vehicle, authorities said.
