Cardiac health-monitoring smart toilet seat maker Casana (formerly Heart Health Intelligence) has raised $14 million in a Series A funding round led by General Catalyst and the Outsiders Fund. Also participating was Bemis Manufacturing Company, a toilet seat manufacturer that led the startup s $2.2 million round last April.
In addition to the fundraise, Casana announced that Austin McChord, the founder and former CEO of cybersecurity technology company Datto, will be stepping in as the startup s new CEO.
WHAT IT DOES
Rochester, New York-based Casana s lead product is the Heart Seat, a device developed by founder Nicholoas Conn during his time at the Rochester Institute of Technology. It contains ECG, ballistocardiogram (BCG) and photoplethysmogram (PPG) sensors to collect a range of heart health metrics and transmits its readings to a cloud network via built-in WiFi and LTE. Impact Earth recently acquired Monroe County s other residential food scrap hauler, Community Composting. An earthy, musty smell hangs in the air of Impact Earth’s cavernous headquarters on Brighton-Henrietta Town Line Road, where crews are emptying buckets of vegetable peels, apple cores, coffee grounds, egg shells, and other food scraps into totes destined for small farms for composting into a top soil-like material. Roughly 20 tons of food scraps pass through the facility each week, according to the company, organic waste collected from residential customers and commercial clients, such as restaurants and institutional kitchens, that would otherwise sit in a landfill.

Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Dubai is collaborating with a Saudi Arabia-based engineering group, Jubail Pearl, to produce and commercialise biofuel production from oil palm and palm oil wastes.
Over the past decades, the palm oil industry has been growing rapidly due to increasing demand for food, cosmetic and hygienic products. Tapping into such opportunities, the UAE has been leveraging its abundant renewable resources and partnering with global companies to reduce its carbon footprint.
Under the initiative, fallen leaves of trees are gathered and raw materials are shredded to produce biomass pellets that are both energy-efficient and carbon neutral.
