Rochester’s Park Avenue Festival wasn’t cancelled over fear of covid, it was cancelled over fear of protests.
That’s the opinion of various people knowledgeable about the situation. It’s also likely true for other festivals and events traditionally held in the city of Rochester – to include the Corn Hill Festival, the Flower City half marathon and the International Jazz Festival.
While state rules on public gatherings have been either impossible or not forthcoming, and cooperation from city officials has been non-existent, there have been two insurmountable obstacles: No way to overcome feared Black Lives Matter protests, and the understaffed Rochester Police Department.

After an attempt to save this year’s edition of the CGI Rochester International Jazz Festival by moving it back a month and changing the location to Rochester Institute of Technology, the event’s producers announced Monday morning that the event will be postponed again.
The new dates are June 17-25, 2022. But it was not immediately clear where the festival will be held.
“We will be back next year and are committed to making every effort to move forward in downtown Rochester and also explore expanding the Festival with programming at Rochester Institute of Technology,” co-producers Marc Iacona and John Nugent said in a press release.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) It was already known the CGI Rochester International Jazz Festival would not be in Rochester in 2021, now, organizers say it won t happen anywhere.
Producers Marc Iacona and John Nugent Monday announced the festival would be postponed to 2022. It was originally slated for July 30 to Aug. 7.
Despite being moved to the campus of the Rochester Institute of Technology to allow for more space, Iaocona and Nugent say holding the festival will not be viable from either a business or health safety perspective due to New York state health guidelines and capacity restrictions. Rochester Institute of Technology has an understated new name for a high-tech complex that will soon centralize the university’s makerspace and performing arts. RIT announced on Friday that the facility currently under construction will officially be called the Student Hall for Exploration and Development, or simply “the SHED.”
