Olmsted County businesses and nonprofits can start applying for a portion of nearly $3.4 million in new COVID-relief grants.
“These funds are available from the state of Minnesota to help our local businesses that have been impacted by the governor’s executive orders as we move through the pandemic,” said Olmsted County Chief Financial Officer Wilfredo Roman-Catala.
On Tuesday, Olmsted County commissioners unanimously approved a pair of grant programs using nearly $3.1 million in state funds and $300,000 in county reserves, which are available after townships didn’t spend all their available funds through earlier federal relief efforts.

How Olmsted County will distribute approximately $3.1 million in state relief funds has yet to be determined.
“The state will be sending this funding fairly quickly, so we can help businesses as soon as possible,” said Wilfredo Roman-Catala, the county’s chief financial officer.
On Tuesday, he asked county commissioners for guidance on how the funds should be distributed, reviewing the grant program used to distribute $3.9 million in federal funds among 250 small businesses.
The state funds, which were approved by the Minnesota Legislature in December, offer counties greater flexibility, which spawned a discussion on whether using the same grant mechanism is the right approach.

Optimism was in short supply in 2020 with Rochester’s restaurants, bars, hotels and other businesses struggling due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Rochester had always managed to avoid the worst of past national recessions because of Mayo Clinic and the oft-repeated mantra of “people still get sick.” This year showed the downside of that with Mayo Clinic’s ICUs overflowing with COVID-19 patients and elective procedure patients being asked to or choosing to stay away.
