The first patient, a 64-year-old woman with a history of shellfish allergy, received dose 1 of the Moderna vaccine and experienced skin irritation, hives, and a rapid heartbeat within 10 minutes. She was treated successfully by medical personnel at the vaccination site. Patient 2, a 39-year-old woman with a history of allergic rhinitis, received dose 1 of the Moderna vaccine and developed hives on her chest and neck within 15 minutes. Medical personnel treated her symptoms at the vaccination site, but she went on to develop mild facial swelling and was transported by ambulance to the emergency department. After brief treatment, her symptoms resolved and she was discharged to home in stable condition.

A graded dosing protocol allowed two patients with hypersensitivity reactions to the first dose of Moderna s COVID-19 vaccine to receive their second doses safely, researchers said.
The patients one with an immediate hypersensitivity reaction managed on site and one needing emergency department transport got divided second doses, reported S. Shahzad Mustafa, MD, of Rochester Regional Health in Rochester, New York, and colleagues

Three to four weeks after receiving the second dose, both patients had IgG antibodies against the spike protein of COVID-19, suggesting vaccination was efficacious despite the graded dosing protocol, they wrote in
Annals of Internal Medicine. One had no reaction to the second dose while the other experience some non-serious allergic symptoms.

As other areas begin to shift gears, Rochester hospitals begin to do the same. Starting this Monday, April 5th, Rochester Regional Health has said patients at five of its area hospitals will be allowed up to two visitors a day, for up to four hours each. Patients who are going into labor will be allowed up to two visitors 24 hours a day, while patients living with developmental or intellectual disabilities can each have one support person 24 hours a day, with another visitor who can stay up to four hours. Any other patient may only have one visitor at a time.
