Rochdale Riverside Concerns have been raised over Rochdale’s flagship Riverside leisure and retail complex after it emerged the council is liable for the rent and business rates on empty units for next 34 years. The new town centre development – home to big names such as M&S, Next and River Island – opened in the summer, but has been badly hit by the pandemic. The cinema, clothes shops and food outlets have been seriously affected by Covid restrictions. Rochdale Council is the ‘head tenant’ of the £80m scheme and has an option to buy the centre for £1 at the end of the 35-year lease.

British bakery chain Greggs is next in the line-up to join Rochdale Riverside in 2021. Announced by Rochdale Borough Council on Wednesday (27 January), the popular eatery will be occupying a 1,000 sq ft unit between the already existing Boots and Reel cinema. In addition to the usual takeaway offering, once it is safe, indoor and outdoor seating will also be available at the unit. Specialising in savoury products such as bakes, sausage rolls, sandwiches and sweet items including donuts and vanilla slices, plus an extensive vegan range, Greggs was founded in 1939 by John Gregg. It will join eateries Heavenly Desserts, Crust, and Loaded Burgers at the leisure and shopping development, which officially opened in Rochdale town centre in April 2020.

Daniel Whelan The developer, in partnership with Japanese investor Kajima, has submitted plans for 240 homes and a 147-bedroom hotel next to the first phase of the town centre regeneration scheme, an £80m retail and leisure complex.  Genr8 Developments and Kajima are delivering the £50m project, which forms part of the wider £400m town centre revamp, in collaboration with Rochdale Development Agency and Rochdale Council. The development includes two apartment blocks reaching nine storeys and comprising a mix of one- and two-bedroom properties available for private rent. The apartments would contribute towards the council’s target of delivering more than 10,500 new homes for the town over the next two decades.
