The festival runs over 10-nights, across a two-kilometre stretch of the West MacDonald Ranges and features a 160,000-watt light display incorporating art from Arrernte, Luritja, Anmatyerre, Warlpiri and Pitjantjatjara nations.
Hidden in the red dunes of Eastern Arrernte Country, just over an hour south-east of Alice Springs, Keringke Arts was one of 40 art centres to be approached to be involved in the festival.
The centre, located in remote Santa Teresa or Ltyentye Apurte, gives artists a way to connect to their roots and put crafts taught to them by family and ancestors into practice. I feel so happy that I m following in their footsteps, Chantelle Mulladad told SBS News.

Parrtjima – A Festival in Light has attracted more than 5000 attendances over the first two nights, with visitors inspired by the large-scale light and art installations, and an action-packed program of events that includes music, workshops, talks and film. Highlights so far have been a spine-tingling exclusive live performance by Electric Fields in front of the MacDonnell Ranges light show, Casey Donovan wowing the crowd and author Bruce Pascoe captivating an eager audience.
One of tonight’s star attractions is NRL legend Josh Addo-Carr, who joins the talks program to discuss his life and premiership-winning career with Parrtjima Curator Rhoda Roberts. Spreading the word about Parrtjima to his followers and the sporting world, Josh will also take part in an NRLNT clinic tomorrow, where he will meet some of the region’s rising rugby league stars and show them a trick or two. I’m only speaking for myself when I say this, but as a First Nations person and a woman, this has been an especially heavy time. We’ve seen three First Nations deaths in custody in the same week, two of which, only revealed under questioning. One woman and two men. In addition to this, we’ve been hearing about our Australian Government’s lack of care when it comes to the safety and well-being of women, even in their own workplace. When you’ve got white cis straight men on one side telling us that non-male identifying people are nothing, acting like First Nations lives mean nothing, what are we supposed to do? How are we supposed to feel?
