Our nine-month-old standard poodle showed me what “sick as a dog” means. I called my husband to give the vet’s report. “Max will die if we don’t do surgery.”
“A righteous man is kind to his beast. Do the surgery,” he said.
When I said “I do” to Larry, I couldn’t have foreseen all the times his character would impact my life even to how we treat our pets. Proverbs 12:10 says, “The righteous care for the needs of their animals, but the kindest acts of the wicked are cruel.” Kindness to animals is godly. In fact, caring for them is part of our purpose.
Almost exactly a year ago today, my family took a leap of faith at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and a period of great uncertainty, doing something they had joked about for years.Â
They decided to take home four baby chickens and raise them in the yard â or âon the homesteadâ as my dad tends to say in tongue-in-cheek fashion â in a largely suburban and urban setting. It is a relatively large lot compared to others in the vicinity of the surrounding Chicago suburbs that allows for a sizable garden and room for hens to roam around freely.Â
It was an enormous project that necessitated consistent research from my sister, who in effect became the mother hen, along with my dad and my brother to build a proper chicken coop and a run that was weatherproof and predator proof.Â

PROVIDENCE Rhode Island has an official state bird, an official state fish, even an official state insect.
Now, the General Assembly is considering naming an official state coral. That’s right, the northern star coral may soon stand alongside the Rhode Island Red chicken, the striped bass and the American burying beetle in the ranks of Ocean State emblems.
Legislation that would give the coral its special designation will come up for approval on the Senate floor on Tuesday. The House version is still in committee.
Sen. James Seveney, when asked why he introduced the bill, essentially said, “Why not?”
