The 1.2-megawatt plant proposed in an industrial park in West Warwick would employ a technique called pyrolysis that uses extreme heat to break down needles, tubing, gloves and other medical waste into combustible tar and gas that can then be burned to generate electricity. Although pyrolysis is not new, using it to process medical waste is. There is only one such facility in the United States.
