To protect songbirds from a fatal disease, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management is reminding Rhode Islanders not to feed them. The DEM first advised Rhode Islanders to take down their feeders and empty their bird baths earlier this month and issued a reminder Wednesday on Twitter. How can I help? Remove feeders + baths until further notice, and encourage neighbors and friends to do the same, the DEM says. The disease has been killing songbirds in the mid-Atlantic. Although no cases have been found here, Rhode Island and other states are trying to keep songbirds from congregating and possibly spreading the disease.
