PROVIDENCE An exhibit that re-envisions the Newport Pell Bridge opened Friday at the Rhode Island School of Design, offering the public a chance to virtually ride a bike across the span that connects Newport and Jamestown.
The exhibit, Crossing the Pell, also includes other virtual elements and was constructed by students in RISD s Adaptive Reuse program, a one-year master s degree program for architects that focuses on the reuse of structures.
The students reimagined the bridge using innovative composite materials for construction. Their design provides access to pedestrians and cyclists.
Liliane Wong, professor and department head of the school s Interior Architecture Department, said her students work is practical, yet visionary, because the students talked to multiple experts throughout the course of the project.
