Editor s note: With the unofficial start of summer on the horizon, The Daily News is examining issues related to Aquidneck Island s beaches. This is the third in a four-part series to get you ready for the season.
The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority plans to run a beach shuttle from the North End of the city to Easton’s Beach in Newport and Sachuest Beach in Middletown on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays between June 19 to Aug. 22.
While the service is being welcomed by Newport officials, the same cannot be said of the reception it has received from some members of the Middletown Town Council.

The seed that became a nonprofit ocean advocacy group was planted on a cold January day in 2006, when Dave McLaughlin was told he couldn’t park on a particular road near Salve Regina University and the Cliff Walk.
He and a friend had been surfing at a popular Newport, R.I., spot at the end of Ruggles Avenue. It was a busy day in that section of the city, famous for The Breakers and other Gilded Age monuments, as three events were taking place, including one at Salve Regina University, so the surfers had to park two blocks away on Shepard Avenue.
Rhode Island Bus Driver Spots Man About to Jump off Bridge so She Gets Out, Saves His Life
The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) commended a bus driver for preventing a man from jumping off a bridge to commit suicide. The driver is being recognized for “exemplary compassion and selflessness” for intervening and saving the man’s life.
“To say she went above and beyond is an understatement,” RIPTA’s chief executive officer, Scott Avedisian, said in a press statement.
Operator Eldorada “Ellie” Giblin was driving the Route 33 bus on the Providence-East Providence line last month when she spotted a man who appeared to be contemplating leaping from the Henderson Bridge.
Family: Former Warwick Mayor Solomon dies

WARWICK, R.I. (AP) The former mayor of Warwick, Rhode Island died Thursday, according to his family.
“It is with tremendous sadness that the family of Joseph J. Solomon, Sr. announce his passing in the early morning hours of May 20, 2021. Joseph died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family, the statement said.
The cause was not given.
Solomon, a Democrat, spent two decades in public service as a municipal judge, city councilor and council president before becoming acting mayor early in 2018 after Scott Avedisian stepped down to become CEO of the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority.
