In an escalating row with Brandeis University, President Ron Liebowitz released a statement on Tuesday announcing that he would not accept an offer from the university’s Board of Trustees for a one-year contract. The dispute appears to be over missed fundraising targets over the past year.
Liebowitz, who joined Brandeis in 2016 after serving as president at Middlebury, is currently six months from the end of his term, and in a statement to the press called the new contract offer “a dead end.”
In his statement, Liebowitz said that the Board’s reasoning for a one-year contract came down to a feeling “that fundraising has been insufficient.” Liebowitz also disputed this, claiming that “fundraising had turned a corner,” and that 2020 had actually been one of the most profitable fundraising years for Brandeis since 2010, even despite the pandemic.

In an unusual public statement, Brandeis University president Ron Liebowitz panned a one-year contract extension offered to him by the university s Board of Trustees.
“The dead-end contract, offered only six months before my term ends, would not allow me to complete the ongoing donor solicitations, particularly those greater than $1 million, that the board has claimed are so critical to the university’s future,” Liebowitz wrote Tuesday in widely distributed statement issued through a public relations firm that is independent of the university.

JTA Brandeis President Ron Liebowitz has accused the US university’s board of offering him a short-term contract intended to force him out.
Displeased with Liebowitz’s fundraising during his tenure, the board offered him a one-year deal to see if he could improve, according to the Boston Globe. Liebowitz balked at the offer, arguing in a letter to the board on Monday that such a contract would not allow him to follow through on commitments made to major donors and secure those gifts.
