YORK, Maine Some averted their eyes and others looked straight ahead as their shots were administered this week inside the parish hall at St. Christopher s Catholic Church.
More than 900 people, including health care workers and seniors, received COVID-19 vaccinations this week at the church, where York Hospital began operating a long-term vaccine clinic Monday.
The hospital expected to finish the week having vaccinated 920 people at the site, spokesperson Jean Kolak said Friday afternoon.
The hospital opened the church location following numerous complaints about how difficult it was to secure an appointment at York Hospital s site in Kittery under Phase 1b of Maine s COVID vaccination rollout plan, which currently includes members of the public 70 and older.

Because of the pandemic, parishes in Maine are taking different approaches to this year’s “Souper” Bowl of Caring. The annual event, always held on Super Bowl Weekend, is a weekend of giving and serving during which 100% of the monetary and food donations collected will be given to local charities to help tackle hunger in the community, according to a news release from Dave Guthro, communications director, Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland.
Traditionally, members of parishes’ youth ministry collect the donations during the weekend, but with restrictions on large gatherings in place, parishes are coming up with creative ways to still score donations in this unusual year.
