The United States District Court for the District of Maryland Tackles a Host of COVID-19 Related Cases in Late 2020, From Evictions to Compassionate Prisoner Release to Restrictions Imposed by Governor Hoganâs Executive Orders

Effective November 11, 2020, the United States District Court for the District of Maryland suspended all in-person proceedings and closed its doors to the public. The restrictions extend, for now, through January 15, 2021. Unsurprisingly, the Court remains busy, including with a host of COVID-19-related matters. This article provides an overview of several notable recent decisions from Maryland’s federal bench arising from the COVID-19 pandemic and attendant public health crisis and the restrictions put in place by state officials to stem the pandemic’s tide.

Texas filed the second challenge, asserting claims against Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
Although the high court declined to accept the challenge, because Texas lacks standing to bring such a challenge against another state, other challenges remain.
Other challengers don’t have Texas’s problem with standing.
Texas’s complaint in effect blazes a trail of arguments – not the only trail, mind you – that others can raise in the high court.

(CN) A federal judge Monday again denied a California church’s request to block state restrictions on indoor gatherings, saying the church is still free to hold outdoor religious services and that lifting the rules would likely contribute to the spread of Covid-19.
“If plaintiffs were to immediately resume numerically uncapped indoor worship, it is likely that this indoor worship like any indoor activity involving members of multiple households would contribute to the spread of Covid-19, straining already-stressed public health infrastructure and filling already-packed ICUs,” U.S. District Judge Jesus Bernal said in his 14-page order denying Harvest Rock Church’s request to overturn California’s rules.
