Opinion: Brooklyn s 7,000-Person Wedding – Boulder Jewish News

It all comes down to “promote the general welfare” vs. “the free exercise…of religion.”  Nov. 8. Satmar Grand Rabbi Aaron Teitelbaum more than freely exercised his religious traditions by hosting a family wedding in Brooklyn reportedly attended by 7,000 guests at a time when coronavirus cases persisted at high levels of infection.  Nov. 23. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio promoted the general welfare by socking the organizers with a laughable $15,000 fine.  Nov. 26. Our dysfunctional Supreme Court stamped a final judgment on a synagogue attendance case – rooted in Brooklyn – prioritizing “the free exercise…of religion” over “the general welfare.”  “Promote the general welfare” is among the principles spelled out in the Constitution’s Preamble, the priorities which compelled the very creation of our Constitution that was proposed at the 1787 Constitutional convention, and subsequently ratified by two-thirds of the states the following year.

12 . 11 . 20 American politics are chaotic these days. But if you want a glimpse into the future, take a look at the Supreme Court decision handed down at the stroke of midnight on Thanksgiving day.  Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn v. Cuomo blocked New York State from enforcing capricious restrictions on houses of worship. Nearly all the justices agreed that these restrictions were unjustified by public health concerns. What s most remarkable about the decision isn’t its commitment to the Constitution, but rather the identity of the plaintiffs: traditional Christians joined Orthodox Jews with an assist from the Muslim community to uphold America’s core commitment to religious freedom.

Secular Court speaks on Church COVID-19 rules

Speaking from a secular platform, the U. S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn and Agudath Israel to roll back the limitations the State of New York had placed on gatherings of over 10 people. As a secular institution, the Court was correct in its ruling to protect freedom of religion even when it is the people who temporarily need protection. Most of the Court’s rational compared the variation in treatment of churches and business activities permitted in the secular community. While the rebellious spirits in the Christian community may cheer this new open door, the Court’s decision should have no effect on Christian churches, especially if they are following Scripture instead of the secular Court. Christian churches are supposed to be marching to a different drummer.
