Emperor Constantine's hand reunited with finger after more than 500 years apart

A missing index finger from a giant statue of the Roman Emperor Constantine has been reunited with the hand it came from after over 500 years. The fragment finally arrived at Rome's Capitoline Museum from the Louvre in Paris. It had been revealed as a missing part of Constantine's hand in 2018 when a 3D model was brought to Rome and proved to be a perfect fit. It had at one time been catalogued as a toe. With the arrival of the actual bronze, finger experts examined it carefully to check it hadn't suffered further damage. "So we are going to take a close look at all the elements to check it was well conserved on its journey," explained Francoise Gaultier, Director of the Department of Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities at the Louvre.

Kerubo quenches her wanderlust during Covid

Daily Monitor Saturday February 27 2021 Eiffel Tower is one of the world’s most recognisable landmarks. The tower was designed as the centerpiece of the 1889 World’s Fair in Paris. Photo /net. Summary For five days, she stayed in Paris, Maryanne Kerubo, toured Eiffel Tower, Louvre Museum, Sacre-Coeur (Sacred Heart of Paris) and the famous Notre Dame. In Amsterdam, she toured different lakes, went to Ajax Museum and went biking.  Advertisement FIt is fair to say that travelling to Europe, the hotbed of Covid-19, deep in the lockdown was almost thoughtless.  Yet, it is equally fair to say that while people have been living in dread of the pandemic for months, not everyone was scared. At least not too scared to shelf their travel plans.

Remembering Ian Jenkins, a scholar and British Museum curator who enriched all who met him with his passion for classical Greece

It was Ian Jenkins’s mother, Lena, who suggested he should apply for the post of a junior research assistant in the department of Greek and Roman antiquities at the British Museum. On his appointment in 1978, he arrived at the grand portals in Bloomsbury, central London, in his Wiltshire boots, the tools of his recent experience as an apprentice stonemason slung in his belt, only to discover that the job was rather more academic than anticipated. He began as he intended to go on, turning tasks that others considered humdrum into gold mines of academic and public interest. Nimbly sidestepping internal conflicts and rivalries, he built collegiate teams within the department of Greek and Roman Antiquities, the department of prints and drawings, the British Museum Education Service, the Joint Association of Classical Teachers, the Hellenic Society and far beyond.

Amersham nostalgia: High & Over - one of the finest UK modern houses

Many would consider Amersham an unlikely place to find the model of ground-breaking British architecture which effectively launched the International Modernist style in Britain. Whilst those of us lucky enough to live here realise we have many architectural gems, few are aware of the international significance of High & Over. The house created a stir when it was designed in 1929 by Amyas Connell. As a student, in 1926 he won a prestigious architecture award for a residency at the British School in Rome. The director at the time was the distinguished archaeologist Bernard Ashmole. He gave Connell his first commission; to build a Modernist Roman Villa on a hilltop overlooking the Misbourne valley.
