Carton, 60, considers himself fortunate even if it took a four-hour round trip to get his son vaccinated. He is among many New Jerseyans going to great lengths to secure the most coveted product in the world right now: a Pfizer or Moderna COVID vaccine. Demand far outweighs the supply across the globe, and New Jersey is no exception. The state receives only 100,000 doses each week from the federal stockpile for the more than 5 million people currently eligible.

Local officials in South Jersey want teachers to be vaccine priority

Teachers should be fast-tracked for coronavirus vaccines, some South Jersey officials argue. In recent days, officials from Burlington and Cumberland counties have called for the state to move teachers and other school staff members into Phase 1A of the vaccine rollout, which includes other essential worker groups like healthcare employees, police officers and firefighters, among others. The Camden County Board of Commissioners also released a statement calling for teachers to be vaccinated as soon as possible. Educators and other school employees are currently part of Phase 1B of the vaccination rollout, according to the state plan. But some original Phase 1B groups, like police officers and emergency medical services workers, have been deemed eligible for shots in recent weeks.
