NJ COVID vaccine: Six mega-sites to open in mid-January

New Jersey plans to open six vaccination mega-sites in early January, including at the Meadowlands racetrack in East Rutherford, as the campaign to inoculate residents expands beyond hospital employees to other health care and essential workers.  The six sites are expected to provide 2,400 vaccinations per day for health care workers through mid-February, state Health Commissioner Judy Persichilli said Friday. In addition to the Meadowlands, the sites include Rockaway Townsquare Mall in Morris County; the New Jersey Convention and Exposition Center in Edison, Middlesex County; Moorestown Mall in Burlington County; Rowan College of South Jersey in Sewell, Gloucester County, and the Atlantic City Convention Center.

South Jersey to play major role in COVID vaccination process

The mega sites will open in early January and vaccinate as many as 2,400 people per day, according to Judy Persichilli, the state health commissioner. Every site will accommodate each successive phase of the vaccine rollout, starting with Phase 1A, which is going on right now and focusing on healthcare workers. Starting on Dec. 28, Phase 1A will expand to long-term care facility residents and staff members.  Phase 1A started early Tuesday morning at University Hospital in Newark. It hit South Jersey later that morning, with vaccinations at Cooper University Hospital in Camden. Hospital systems, including Cooper, Virtua and Inspira in South Jersey, are administering the Pfizer vaccine at the moment, which last week became the first COVID vaccine to gain emergency use approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
