The Oneida County Board of Elections won’t be party to a protracted legal battle after agreeing to a settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice.
The settlement, announced by the Justice Department on Monday, will bring resolution to a voting rights lawsuit connected to the 2020 election. The Justice Department announced it intended legal action on March 23 before working with the county board of elections to find an agreement.
The settlement requires the Oneida County Board of Elections to develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure all timely submitted voter registration applications are reviewed and processed under the National Voter Registration Act. The board also will train all poll officials and election personnel in provisional ballot requirements dictated by the Help America Vote Act.

UTICA â Anthony J. Brindisi, former congressman for New Yorkâs 22nd District, is running for a newly created seat in the state Supreme Courtâs Fifth Judicial District.
The Utica Democrat, who served one term in Congress after winning election in 2018, said he hopes to bring his history of legislative skill to the state judiciary.
He is running for a seat created by a state law passed in May, which added fourteen new seats to the various districts of the state Supreme Court, including one new seat in the Fifth Judicial District. The district is comprised of Jefferson, Lewis, Oswego, Herkimer, Oneida and Onondaga counties, with Supreme Court judges being elected by voters district-wide.
