Shane van Gisbergen has completed a dominant sweep of the Repco Mt Panorama 500, with the Red Bull Ampol Racing driver cruising to victory in Race 2.
Van Gisbergen felt at home on the mountain when it mattered on the weekend, claiming two wins and a pole to assert himself as the 2021 championship favourite.
Waters out-dragged van Gisbergen off the line and edged into an early lead, but the #97 shadowed the #6 Monster Energy Mustang s every move.
Through lap 8, several midfield runners had made their first visits to BP Ultimate Pit Lane, including James Courtney.

Van Gisbergen wins dramatic Mt Panorama opener Repco Supercars Championship By James Pavey
Shane van Gisbergen has picked up where he left off in Bathurst, with the Red Bull Ampol Racing driver dominating Race 1 of the new season at the Repco Mt Panorama 500.
Van Gisbergen, who claimed victory in last October’s Bathurst 1000, was never headed in the 40-lap affair, which saw a number of key runners fall by the wayside.
It marked the third instance that the Kiwi had won the opening race of the season, following victories on the streets of Adelaide in 2017 and 2018.
The race was punctuated by separate dramas for Cameron Waters,Tim Slade and Anton De Pasquale, with the latter triggering the sole BP Ultimate Safety Car intervention of the race.

Operation Bathurst 500 launched in leadup to championship event at Bathurst
Police have launched a high-visibility operation in the state’s Central Tablelands as race enthusiasts prepare for the 2021 Supercars Championship season launch.
Round one of the Repco Supercars Championship will commence at Mount Panorama, Bathurst, today (Friday 26 February 2021). The event consists of three days of Supercars and Support category racing, followed by two private ride days.
Western Region Commander, Acting Assistant Commissioner Peter McKenna, was joined by Supercars Australia Chief Operating Officer Shane Howard and Bathurst Mayor, Councillor Bobby Bourke, to officially launch Operation Bathurst 500.
Traditionally, events of its kind at Bathurst have drawn in large crowds of competitors, officials and spectators. However, this year’s event will attract an expected crowd of 10,000 patrons across the three days of racing in accordance with the NSW Health COVID-19 Safety Plan
