The year 2020 had many terrible fires and COVID-19, for Mother Lode it was also a year for wildlife sightings, gardening, astronomy, and more.
The three most-read news stories on myMotherLode.com in 2020 were related to what became the 2,800-acre Moc Fire which ignited on August 20. It threatened Hetch Hetchy infrastructure and spurred widespread evacuation orders in Groveland and Pine Mountain Lake. President Donald Trump approved FEMA funding for Tuolumne County in October for the Moc Fire in a federal disaster declaration which also covered other large fires in the state. Sonora, CA – Tuolumne County Public Health reports 28 new community COVID-19 cases and 13 additional inmate cases at the Sierra Conservation Center. Two known SCC inmates are hospitalized. One of the new community cases is hospitalized and the remaining individuals appear to be isolating at home. Nineteen individuals were released from isolation and 1 person was released from the hospital. There are six total hospitalized COVID-19 positive patients.
Mariposa County Public Health reports 18 new cases which is the largest number of new cases in a single day for the county. They state, “Many of the cases are linked to holiday travel and gatherings.” Public health officials add, “We urge everyone to follow all COVID-19 gui

Tuolumne County Active COVID-19 Cases Over Time(12-30-20)
Sonora, CA – Tuolumne County Public Health reports 17 new community COVID-19 cases and 63 additional inmate cases at the Sierra Conservation Center. All of the new community cases appear to be isolating at home and there are 3 known SCC inmates hospitalized. Nine individuals were released from isolation. There are six total hospitalized COVID-19 positive patients.
Today’s community cases include 2 males and 1 female under 20, 3 males in their 20s, 3 males and 3 females in their 30s, 2 males in their 40s, 1 male and 1 female in their 60s, and 1 female in their 70’s.
