EU court supports group against imports from Israeli settlements

A European Union court on Wednesday ruled in favour of litigants seeking to ban the import of goods from Israeli settlements on occupied land, rescinding a decision by the bloc’s executive branch in 2019 not to register a petition submitted by citizens. The European Commission – the EU’s executive arm – failed to adequately state the reasons for its decision not to register the European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) proposal, the Luxembourg-based General Court said in a statement. Through the ECI, EU citizens make proposals for legislation that the European Commission is obliged to consider when they are supported by the signatures of one million citizens.

EU aims to cut reliance on foreign suppliers

BRUSSELS: The EU aims to cut its dependency on Chinese and other foreign suppliers in six strategic areas including raw materials, pharmaceutical ingredients and semiconductors, under an industrial action plan to be announced next week. A draft seen by Reuters outlined the urgency of the task ahead, citing Europe’s reliance on China for about half of 137 products used in sensitive ecosystems, mainly raw materials and pharmaceuticals and other products key to the bloc’s green and digital goals. The updated industrial strategy plan, devised after the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic led to bottlenecks in supply chains, will be presented by Margrethe Vestager, EU digital chief, and EU industry chief Thierry Breton on May 5.
