WNBA: Washington Mystics Tina Charles is chasing a championship

The chase for a title motivated Charles’s move to DC during the 2020 offseason. Unfortunately, the coronavirus pandemic intervened. Due to underlying health concerns, Charles received a health exemption and opted out of the WNBA bubble. Her debut season for the then-defending champion Mystics thus was delayed. This delay, however, has not diminished her drive for that elusive championship. At the Mystics’ media day, Charles responded to a question about her continued dedication to the game with the following: I don’t have a championship. That’s what keeps me hungry, that’s what keeps me motivated. That’s what makes me want to continue to get better.

MYSTICS ADD LATOYA SANDERS TO BENCH - Washington Mystics

Washington Mystics April 23, 2021 Mike Thibault announced that LaToya Sanders has been elevated to assistant coach for the 2021 WNBA season. Sanders recently announced her retirement from the WNBA and had joined the team’s player development group.  She takes over for Asjha Jones, who was named director of strategy for the NBA’s Portland Trailblazers. “LaToya was an easy and natural choice for this position. She was a great student of the game as a player. She was an exemplar leader on the court, a strong voice in the locker room, and a great mentor for younger teammates,” stated Thibault. “She was one of those players who was respected by everyone in the organization. She has done a great job this preseason in her role as a player development coach and has shown us that she is ready for this new role.”
