Indigenous communities across the country and many Canadians have been sharing their grief about the deaths of children who attended these schools, since an unmarked burial site was found in British Columbia in late May. Since then, some communities have decided to forgo parts of their usual Canada Day festivities.

Instead they focused on marking National Indigenous People s Day. Leaders of three northern Saskatchewan communities are pressing “pause” on Canada Day this year and chose instead to focus on marking National Indigenous People’s Day on Monday. Lac La Ronge Indian Band Chief Tammy Cook-Searson said she and the mayors of neighbouring La Ronge and Air Ronge did so to “to honour the 215 children that were discovered, the remains that were discovered… in Kamloops, B.C.,” and “the many other children that didn’t make it from residential school.”
