Following the runaway success of his 2019 breakout hit âOld Town Road,â Lil Nas X hasnât just established himself as one of the most thrilling new voices in music, but a bona fide style star too. There were the Stetsons and double denim of his early videos, yes, but it was his more flamboyant riffs on this signature look that marked him out as a true fashion king. (Who can forget the hot pink Versace cowboy outfitâcomplete with a bondage-inspired chest harness, obviouslyâthat he wore to last yearâs Grammys?)
Written on the day one of his family members was taken away, ‘
Animalistic’ explores the topic of incarceration and the discomfort and cultural issues around it.
Speaking on the single, Kida says,
Writing Animalistic was a spiritual process for me. I woke up early one morning, grabbed my pen and paper. started jotting down to the instrumental and tapped into the forces I needed; the lyrics just flowed from me. I was painting a perfect picture of an African boy speaking to his people, trying to preach to them in a kind of way. You can vibe to the song but at the same time it is sending a message across to young people to stay up and stay woke! “Gangsterism got us locked in prison” was a real life story of a family member that had been taken away that same morning when I wrote the verse.
SciFiNow and now one of the most iconic members of the sub-sector, Malorie Blackman’s
Noughts & Crosses is getting its own stunning edition from The Folio Society.
Set in an alternative history in which native African people had colonised the European people, rather than the other way around, with Africans having made Europeans their slaves,
Noughts & Crosses takes place in an alternative 21st-century Britain, known as Albion.
Modern Albion is a deeply hierarchical society, and though slavery has been abolished for some time, segregation, similar to the Jim Crow Laws, continues to operate to allow Crosses (black people) the ruling elite, keep Noughts (white people) under their control.
Noughts and Crosses now streaming on Peacock, a lavish new edition of the novel that the show is based on has arrived.
The Folio Society, which specializes in limited, meticulously crafted, and simply gorgeous editions of classic fiction and non-fiction books, has now published a new edition of
Noughts and Crosses, the first book in Malorie Blackman s epic alternate-history saga.
The book features seven full-color illustrations by London-based Nigerian artist Kingsley Nebechi, along with an introduction from poet Benjamin Zephaniah (named by the
Times one of the 50 great post-war poets).
Have a look at some of the stunning illustrations from the book, starting with the cover art:
