UK project explores new ways to recover waste heat

A UK university has launched a “world-first” research project to develop a new way of recovering waste heat from industry and decarbonise heating and cooling through new hydrogen technologies. A team led by London South Bank University (LSBU) will investigate new ways of providing heating and cooling from energy intensive industries including steel, glass, paper and food. The new hydrogen technologies which will be studied include chemical heat pumps to recover waste heat at various grades, long-distance transport networks to transfer recovered energy more efficiently and advanced heating and cooling systems. The principal investigator is Yunting Ge, LSBU professor of building services engineering, working with two UK academic partners.

New SKILLcard allows graduate HVAC engineers onto sites

Heating and Ventilation News Academic Card will allow site access for students without on-the-job experience BESA has announced a SKILLcard for engineers with degrees and other higher-level qualifications.  The Academically Qualified Person (AQP) card has been developed so graduates can visit construction sites to help them gain more practical experience.  SKILLcard, part of the construction-wide CSCS scheme, is used by heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration operatives to provide proof of qualifications, skills and experience.   It already offers a Professionally Qualified Person (PQP) card, but this requires a certain level of industry experience. The new AQP card will enable graduate engineers and those holding further education qualifications such as HNDs and HNCs to provide evidence of their qualifications including the health & safety training needed to be allowed on site.
