Hawks swoop: 15 arrested in R10Â million Nelson Mandela funeral fraud racket

DURBAN â FIFTEEN people are due to appear in the East London Magistrate s Court on fraud and corruption charges relating to the procurement services for the funeral service of former president, Nelson Mandela.
The accused, which include high profile Buffalo City employees, prominent political party members and businessmen as well as business entities; face charges of fraud, money laundering, contravention of the Municipal Finances Act and corruption related to the procurement of service providers for the transportation and booking of venues during the memorial service and funeral preparations of the late Dr Nelson Mandela by the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality.
Eastern Cape Health MEC Sindiswa Gomba has arrived at the East London Magistrate's Court on charges of fraud, money laundering, the contravention of the Municipal Finance Management Act and corruption relating to R10-million meant for the funeral of Nelson Mandela. Gomba will take the stand alongside 14 other accused, including African National Congress (ANC) bigwigs in the Buffalo City metro. They include ANC regional chairperson Phumlani Mkolo, former mayor Zukisa Ncitha, former speaker Luleka Simon-Nzele and business people.

Two teenage boys have been charged with the murder of an Islington student.
Anas Mezenner was stabbed in West Green Road near Turnpike Lane station just after 9pm on Tuesday (January 19).
The 17-year-old was studying for a creative media production diploma at City and Islington College.
Despite the efforts of the emergency services, Anas died at 4.25am on Wednesday (January 20) at Royal London Hospital.
Two 16-year-old boys were arrested on that day and charged early today (January 22) with murder and possession of points and blades.
