LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - During a Thursday workshop meeting, the Lubbock Independent School Districtâs Board of Trustees approved a motion to make masks optional during graduation, summer programs and next school year.
The current mask requirement will remain in place for the current school year.
School data shows the number of positive COVID-19 cases are low and vaccination rates are high, Kathy Rollo, district superintendent said during the meeting.

The conversation started when Dr. Rollo was asked how the year has gone so far, and how they intend to finish the year out. Rollo explained that she is grateful that they were able to make it to the end of the year, is extremely proud that Lubbock ISD has been the largest school district in Texas to open on time, that most of their older kids are now eligible for the vaccine and that many have received it, that their COVID-19 numbers are low, and is happy that they were able to have so many kids come back for in-person learning, dropping virtual learning from 30% to 10%. Karama Neal was named Administrator for the Rural Business-Cooperative Service. Most recently, Neal served as president of Southern Bancorp Community Partners. Mike Schmidt was named senior advisor in the Office of the Secretary. Previously, Schmidt served as senior advisor for USDA’s Farm Production and Conservation Mission Area since January 20, 2021.
Lisa Ramirez was named Director of the Office of Partnerships and Public Engagement. She most recently served as the Chief Innovative Officer for the Lubbock Independent School District in Lubbock, Texas.

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - Local school districts are trying to boost enrollment numbers for next school year, saying they had lower enrollment numbers due to COVID this year than years past, just like other schools across the country, emphasizing lower numbers in younger children.
The Texas Education Agency reported three percent fewer students were enrolled in public schools this past October compared to October 2019 with more than half that reduction from students in early education, Pre-K, and Kindergarten students all of which are not mandatory in Texas.
