Apply now for sheriffs’ $500 college scholarships Staff Students can apply now for a $500 college scholarship offered annually by the Louisiana Sheriff’s Association.  Applicants must be residents of their parish and enroll as full-time undergraduate students at a university or college within the state. The Lafourche Sheriff’s Office requires applicants to attend Nicholls State University or Fletcher Technical Community College.  In Lafourche, applications are available at LPSO.net/scholarship. Completed applications can be turned in at any Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office location or mailed to Capt. Brennan Matherne, P.O. Box 5608, Thibodaux, LA 70302.  Scholarship applications can also be downloaded from the Sheriff’s Association website at lsa.org/public/scholarship.

LPSO to increase deputy presence during Carnival season for Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign January 31, 2021 Sheriff Craig Webre announced the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office will join other local law enforcement agencies in participating in the statewide Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign which runs through the heart of the Mardi Gras season – February 5-16, 2021. The campaign is coordinated and funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission. As part of this effort, additional deputies will be assigned to saturated patrol efforts to target impaired drivers and help keep motorists safe.

Authorities investigating Thibodaux storage unit burglary dan.copp@houmatoday.com Authorities are asking for the public’s help in finding a man suspected of burglarizing several storage units in Thibodaux.  Deputies responded Jan. 16 to a storage facility on Tiger Drive after several units had been burglarized with some items of value missing, the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office said. Security video captured an unidentified man who was driving a pickup truck.   Authorities are asking anyone who can identify the man or with information about the burglary to submit an anonymous Crime Stoppers tip at 1-800-743-7433 or online at www.crimestoppers.org. Tips can also be submitted through the Sheriff’s Office mobile app.

Food banks see demand double in Terrebonne and Lafourche amid COVID-19

The coronavirus pandemic s toll on jobs and income has made people s lives more difficult, increasing demand on local food banks.  As a result, agencies whose purpose is helping to fulfill the most basic human function are seeing an explosion in the number of people who struggle to feed themselves and their families. Lawrence DeHart, president of the Terrebonne Churches United Good Samaritan Food Bank in Houma, said the number of people his agency serves has doubled. The year before last, we did 10,500 people, DeHart said. In the last 12 months, we did 21,800. Catholic Charities Executive Director Nicole Bourgeois said the volume of people fed by the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux has also doubled.
