But for the pandemic, I would be flying to New York City to see a snowy owl standing in a Central Park meadow. It’s the first time the Arctic tundra dweller has been seen in the park in130 years. “Wow! A magnificent snowy owl is in NYC! ,” @Centralparknyc posted on IG.
The rare sighting took me back to 2013, when I persuaded my husband to ditch his birthday dinner in favor of careening over to Marina del Rey to see blue-footed boobies that had appeared offshore. We got there just before sunset. Avid birders had set up scopes and invited us to take a look. It was beyond thrilling to see these visitors from Ecuador’s Galápagos Islands.
Supervisor Kathryn Barger Hosts Free Food Giveaway At Castaic Lake
Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger hosted a drive-through grocery giveaway at Castaic Lake Friday.
The giveaway took place Friday morning, with a line of L.A. County residents forming at 8:30 a.m., according to the supervisor’s office.
“Just in time for Christmas, we distributed groceries to 1,430 Santa Clarita households at Castaic Lake today,” Supervisor Barger said. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to partner with our dedicated community volunteers and the L.A. Regional Food Bank to ensure local families are fed this holiday season.”

The drive-through event was organized in collaboration with the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, L.A. County Department of Parks and Recreation, Department of Beaches and Harbors, L.A. County Libraries, and took place at the Castaic Lake Park Headquarters as a response to the pandemic.
Free Food Giveaway At Castaic Lake Announced By Supervisor Kathryn Barger’s Office
The office of Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger has announced a drive-through grocery giveaway at Castaic Lake this week.
The giveaway is set for Friday, Dec. 18 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., with line formation set to begin at 8:30 a.m., according to the supervisor’s office.
Barger is working with the L.A. County Department of Parks and Recreation and Department of Beaches and Harbors, L.A. County Libraries, and the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank to host the drive-through in response to the pandemic, with the giveaway scheduled to take place at 32132 Castaic Lake Drive in Castaic.
