Active COVID-19 Cases in Lafayette County Linger Around 400

After seeing a slight dip in December, active cases of COVID-19 in Lafayette County have hoovered around 400 daily for most of January.
As of Jan. 26, there were 382 active cases in the county, according to the city of Oxford’s website.
Since March, there have been 5,442 cases and 105 deaths. About 20 people died in January from COVID-19-related illnesses in Lafayette County, with seven deaths since Jan. 23.
According to the Mississippi State Department of Health, from Jan. 11-24, Lafayette County had the 12
th highest number of new cases – 509 – in the state with an 11 percent increase over the previous two weeks.

LAFAYETTE COUNTY, Ark. (KSLA) - Arkansas has expanded its service to those wanting to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. And leaders in one rural ArkLaTex county say they are prepared to keep up with the state’s endeavor.
Lafayette County School District is a small district in southwest Arkansas with around 80 teachers and 500 students, but this district is leading the push for school personnel receiving the COVID-19 vaccination.
Robert Edwards, superintendent of Lafayette County schools, was among the first educators in the county to get the shot.
Aberdeen School District - 90 minute delay. Students can begin being dropped off at 8:45 a.m.
Alcorn County School District - Two hour delay.
Benton County School District - Two hour delay.
Holly Springs School District - Virtual learning from Jan. 11 through Jan. 29.
Itawamba County School District - Two hour delay.
Lafayette County School District - Two hour delay.
Lee County School District - Two hour delay.
Marshall County School District - Two hour delay.
North Tippah School District - Two hour delay.
Pontotoc City School District - Two hour delay.
Pontotoc County School District - Two hour delay.

The Magnolia School District is recognizing new faculty members for the 2020-21 school year.
Beverlyn Rowden is a ninth-grade business and EAST teacher at the Magnolia High School Freshman Academy. She is a graduate from Waldo High School and attended Southern Arkansas University. While at SAU, she earned a BBA degree in finance, a master of arts in teaching in finance, and completed the P-12 Principals Licensure Program.
Prior to coming to Magnolia, Rowden taught business at Norman Middle School in Crossett from 2008-2009. She instructed students at Bradley School District from 2009-2011, and most recently she was employed with the Lafayette County School District from 2011-2020.
