Early morning rain causes flooding, road closures in Acadiana

Road closures have been announced in several parishes in Acadiana.
On Wednesday morning, several roads in Lafayette Parish and Iberia Parish were due to high water from overnight heavy rain.
In Iberia, the closure of the following roads was made due to flooding
Chastant Road
Drivers are asked to not drive into water covering roadways.
In Lafayette Parish, The Lafayette Parish Sheriff s Office has updated a list of road closures in the parish for Wednesday, May 12.

Driver of vehicle arrested in Lafayette Parish after calls of occupants brandishing weapons

The Lafayette Parish Sheriff s Office says a New Orleans man is in custody following a call of a vehicle traveling around Lafayette Parish with occupants allegedly brandishing firearms and pointing them at other vehicles on the road.
At around 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, 2021, an anonymous caller advised dispatchers of a vehicle traveling with multiple occupants insideâsome of them allegedly brandishing firearms, as well as pointing the firearms at other vehicles.
Deputies were able to locate the vehicle, executing a traffic stop in the 100 block of W. Farrel Road in Lafayette.

A district court judge heard testimony Thursday for a second day from witnesses during a hearing for the man accused of gunning down a Lafayette Police officer and wounding three others in 2017.
State prosecutors and defense attorneys for Ian Howard continued to call several witnesses to testify before 15th Judicial District Judge Valerie Gotch Garrett.
Howard, 31, is accused of fatally shooting Cpl. Michael Middelbrook and wounding several other Lafayette Police officers as they responded to a shots fired call at the Big Boyz store on Moss Street in Lafayette in October 2017.
Event aims to connect with Hispanic community in Lafayette

A community event aiming to help connect with the Hispanic community in Lafayette was held Wednesday. A Heart For Children Ministry partnered up with Walmart, the Lafayette Parish Sheriff s Office, and ACLA, the Cultural Association of Latinos in Acadiana, for a community walk in the Herbert neighborhood.
Organizers hoped to bridge the gap between officers and communities of color, and to encourage kindness in the community. We all need to be the hands and feet of Jesus. We all need to work together and help each other out. That s what Acadiana is all about, said director Kenneth Hargrave. It s one of the most unique places in the world. When events happen like COVID-19 or a hurricane or bad weather, people to come together and help each other out.
LPD hosts Community Walk

The Lafayette Police Department hosted a community walk today in the McComb-Veazey neighborhood.
The LPD hosted the event with other local law enforcement partners and the Law Enforcement Community Relations Committee.
The event started in front of the McComb-Veazey Community House on Twelfth Street.
Law Enforcement Officers with the Lafayette Police Department, Lafayette Parish Sheriff s Office and the Lafayette City Marshal s Office walked the neighborhood to visit with residents, listened to any concerns and introduced themselves.
Food was provided and Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center Professionals were on site administering COVID-19 Vaccines.
