As the national economy has improved, the projections for Louisiana s economic recovery have become more optimistic over the past year, but a new forecast from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette says many of the state s metro areas could see job growth slow over the next few quarters.

Sales ended the year up 1.33% from 2019 and up 6.22% from 2018, according to LEDA. December 2020 sales were the second highest single month on record following December 2014. “Holiday shopping exceeded LEDA’s forecast of $1.1 billion which gave us the boost we needed to break the sales record set in 2014,” says Gregg Gothreaux, President and CEO of the Lafayette Economic Development Authority in a press release.

UL Lafayette’s Louisiana Entrepreneurship and Economic Development Center and the Greater Southwest Louisiana Black Chamber of Commerce will lead the 12-week initiative. The entities are enlisting volunteer businesspersons who will provide consulting and mentoring to owners of small businesses and people interested in starting a business on the north side of Lafayette. Accelerate Northside is part of an 18-month initiative that the LEED Center will coordinate to help bolster economic development in several regions of Acadiana, including rural areas. The center supports small businesses, entrepreneurs and economic development agencies in Louisiana.

The Lafayette Business Recovery Program launched by Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG) and Lafayette Economic Development Authority (LEDA) aims to stabilize local businesses and retain and create jobs. LCG and LEDA received around $800,000 in funding and the Business Relief Fund currently holds about $400,000, so LCG s Chief of Minority Affairs Carlos Harvin said there is still assistance available for small businesses. Businesses may apply for a forgivable load or grant of up to $10,000 to assist with up to three months of costs associated with qualifying business expenses incurred not prior to March of 2020. This includes but is not limited to rent, payroll, benefits, and utilities.

Kibberia Owners Coming Back Home for Expansion into Scott USL graduates Georges and Martha Antoun are celebrating the expansion and grand opening of Kibberia in Scott today as the commercial kitchen is setting up shop at the former Discount Furniture building on Cameron Street, according to a press release from Lafayette Economic Development Authority, Kibberia was founded by another USL graduate Carole Antoun Iskandar, who currently operates the commercial kitchen and restaurant in Danbury, Connecticut. The state-of-the-art facility in Scott will operate as a sister location overseen by her as it will provide prepared, fresh foods to regional grocery stores and supermarkets.
