After Pellerin grand jury decision, Lafayette activists turn to what s next

After a grand jury declined to bring charges against the Lafayette police officers who fatally shot a 31-year-old Black man last year, local activists are turning to what s next.  Trayford Pellerin was shot and killed by officers who were responding to reports of a man with a knife on Aug. 21, 2020. A grand jury considered second-degree murder charges but on Tuesday declined to indict the officers involved. Now local activists, like Devon Norman president and director of the Village 337, are looking to turn their frustration and disappointment into action. The organization is asking residents to come to the May 18 meetings of the city and parish councils.

Outdoor dining: Streateries are now closer to reality in Lafayette

LAFAYETTE, Ind. Long before COVID-19 challenged downtown eateries to transform their approach to serving guests, a landscape class at Purdue University researched an approach gaining appeal in larger urban areas. Five years before the pandemic, the Purdue students looked at how downtown Lafayette eateries could utilize parking spaces outside their front doors by creating outdoor seating. Streateries, as they were coined, sounded like a good idea at the time, said Lafayette planner and project manager Margy Deverall. The first reading of a resolution to allow streateries and parklets public spaces created for visitors to sit, snack, sip coffee, hang out and enjoy the downtown experience was presented at last week s City Council meeting.
