Justice Bhatti to serve as LHC chief justice for 32 months July 8, 2021 ISLAMABAD: The new Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court (LHC), Muhammad Ameer Bhatti, will hold the top slot for 32 months unless he is elevated to the Supreme Court before his retirement. He will be superannuated on March 7, 2024 after attaining the constitutional retirement age for high court judges of 62. If he is elevated to the apex court before his retirement, he will have three additional years. Following Justice Bhatti’s elevation as the LHC chief justice, Justice Malik Shahzad Ahmad Khan has become the puisne judge. He will become the LHC head after the retirement of Justice Bhatti and will serve till March 14, 2025. Justice Shujaat Ali Khan is now at number three of the seniority list of LHC judges.

LHC orders govt to provide free burial facility in cemeteries July 4, 2021 LAHORE: Lahore High Court (LHC) Chief Justice Muhammad Qasim Khan has ordered the Punjab government to conduct free burial in cemeteries. The court imposed a ban on collection of money for burial in cemeteries across the province. Justice Qasim Khan issued an eight-page written verdict on Saturday. The LHC CJ observed that the Punjab government should amend the law regarding burial of the deceased. He also cited Hadiths and international laws in the verdict. The CJ wrote in the decision that citizens pay taxes to the government all their lives for buying various items. Even in death they are charged money in the name of graves and other things, he added. It is a responsibility of the government to bear the cost of burial. The law should be amended so that the administration could provide free transport to the cemetery for burial, he added.
