Author: Aysin Dedekorkut-Howes (MENAFN - The Conversation) With most of the world s people now living in urban areas, the coronavirus pandemic has highlighted the importance of urban resilience. It s just as important for adapting to climate change. Put simply, resilience is the ability of a system, in this case a city, to cope with a disruption. This involves either avoiding, resisting, accommodating or recovering from its impacts. Our research , recently published in the journal Urban Research and Practice, examined two coastal Australian cities, the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. Our aim was to identify ways to improve urban resilience to coastal climate hazards. We found the political aspect of resilience is often overlooked but is critically important.

Construction commences on new 1000+ bed prison expansion

The $653 million expansion to the Southern Queensland Correctional Centre at Spring Creek is estimated to be completed in 2023, providing 1000 workers with employment throughout construction and creating more than 600 permanent jobs. Simon Hughes, Project Director at John Holland, said at the Lockyer Valley Chamber of Commerce breakfast on Wednesday that the project would help address overcrowding in the Queensland prison and corrections system. Mr Hughes said the facility would adopt a health and rehabilitation operating model to enhance safer communities as well through mental health and drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs.
