New LaGrange County engineer hits the road running

LAGRANGE — When Tharon Morgan learned she’d been hired as LaGrange County’s new highway department engineer, she said she felt like she was coming home. Morgan, a civil engineer, is a 2010 graduate of Prairie Heights High School and a 2013 graduate of Trine University. In the years since she graduated from college, she worked as both a land surveyor and as a staff engineer for the Indiana Department of Transportation in Fort Wayne. The highway department engineer’s job, she said, is the best of both those worlds. Morgan was hired earlier this month, filling a job that sat vacant for nearly two years. Her duties include helping to design new road rebuilding projects, helping to oversee the county’s bridge projects and act as a liaison between the county and the state’s transportation department.

Commissioner Larry Miller dies

LAGRANGE — The flags outside the LaGrange County Office Building, home of the LaGrange County Commissioners, flew at half-staff Thursday in honor of one of their own. Those flags, as well as the flags flown outside of the LaGrange County Courthouse, the LaGrange County Justice Building, and the LaGrange County Sheriff’s office were all lowered late Wednesday afternoon in honor of LaGrange County Commissioner Larry Miller, who died at his home on Wednesday. Miller, 69, was recovering from a serious case of COVID-19 that hospitalized him for nearly two months. He had recently returned home and been back to attending public meetings virtually before his death this week.

Commissioners wrap up 2020

LAGRANGE — For the first time in nearly two months, Commissioner Larry Miller was back at a LaGrange County Commissioners’ meeting Wednesday morning. Miller was admitted to a Fort Wayne hospital in early November after contracting a serious case of COVID-19 and was only recently released from the hospital. Miller made his appearance by phone, admitting he has a long way to go before his health recovers enough that he can safely return to the LaGrange County Commissioners’ chambers. The commissioners traditionally meet at the end of the year to wrap up any loose ends. This year, the commission chose to elect Terry Martin as the new president of the LaGrange County Board of Commissioners, replacing Miller who’s held that title for the last several years.
