Edgeworthstown family suspected of running illegal puppy farm to face Circuit Court

Several members of an Edgeworthstown family that gardaí suspect of running an illegal puppy farm have been served with the book of evidence and will go to Circuit Court.
Jonathan Wykes, Jane Ward, Margaret Stokes, Johanna Wykes and Chantel Stokes, all of Lisnanagh, Edgeworthstown appeared at last week’s sitting of Granard District Court and will reappear at Longford Circuit Court on June 1.
A sixth family member, Kevin Stokes was due to appear at Tuesday’s sitting of Longford District Court to also be be served with the book of evidence.
Man jailed for defilement of 13-year-old school girl

A former teacher who engaged in multiple acts of defilement and grooming of a 13-year-old girl has been jailed following his appearance at Longford Circuit Court on January 20, 2021.
Cian Cooney, with an address at Laurel Drive, Esker Hill, Portlaoise, was sentenced to six years and six months in prison with the final 18 months suspended for five years.
The 35-year-old entered a guilty plea last May to 11 counts of defilement, sexual activity and exploitation of the 13-year-old girl between October 1, 2013 and December 31, 2013.
At a sitting of Longford Circuit court in Mullingar last week, Judge Keenan Johnson ruled that Mr Cooney could be named, stating that “justice must not just be done, but must be seen to be done”.
Book of evidence served on Longford school robbery accused

The Book of Evidence was served last Tuesday on a man accused of armed robbery at a Longford town school in August 2020.
James Cranny, 14 Meadow Crest, Boyle, Co Roscommon, was due to face Circuit Court Judge Keenan Johnson last Tuesday but, due to ongoing Covid-19 restrictions, the vast majority of Circuit Court hearings have been pushed out to February.
Mr Cranny is facing six charges, including attempted robbery of the primary school, the attempted robbery of three people at the school, the production of a screwdriver as a weapon,robbery of €100 cash from one person and €135 cash from another.
Longford man on child sex charges remanded in custody

A man charged with three counts of having sexual intercourse with a child under the age of 15 has been remanded in custody pending his appearance at Longford Circuit Court on January 12.
The man, who cannot be named due to the age of his victim, appeared before Judge Seamus Hughes on December 22, when he was also charged with three counts of assault causing harm, domestic violence and of breaching his bail conditions.
Gda Linda McConnell, giving evidence, explained that the man’s last sign on at a local garda station was on November 5, 2020, and that he had failed to sign on since.
