Members of Longford Municipal District are eager to take in charge the Leader Park estate, which Cllr Seamus Butler has said is one of, if not the last estate in town that hasn’t been taken in charge by the council.
He asked for an update on the process at last week’s meeting of Longford Municipal District and was told by Area Engineer
Eamonn Bennett that there was no funding that he was aware of to bring the development to a standard for taking in charge.
“Without funding, we can’t do it,” he said.
Cllr John Browne, who supported the proposal to take the estate in charge asked whether or not it would be possible to do so in 2022.

The Longford town area is set to be a lot more colourful if a notice of motion submitted by Cllr Seamus Butler at last week’s Longford MD meeting gets full support.
Cllr Butler proposed that Longford Municipal District provide whatever civil works and assistances that are required to mount the Squirrel statue prototype provided by the Mide Arts Group in Newtownforbes.
“It’ll be on our national route and will attract attention. The younger people will make about half a dozen more over the next 18 months,” he told his MD colleagues.

As part of Ireland’s Climate Action Plan, it is hoped to see a 30% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030 and a 50% reduction by 2050, a meeting of Longford Municipal District has heard.
Director of Services John Brannigan raised the issue at the end of last week’s MD meeting, which was held via Microsoft Teams due to Covid-19.
“Every local authority needs to identify de-carbonising zones,” he told councillors.
“I’m proposing Longford town to be that zone. Work will need to be undertaken by the Climate Change SPC.”
Councillors responded positively to the proposal with Cllr Peggy Nolan noting that it “will help us with endeavours to get cars off Main Street”.

There are currently no potential buyers for Longford Greyhound Track, according to local auctioneer Fintan McGill of Sherry FitzGerald McGill, who says the auctioneers are looking for interested parties.
“It’s still on the market,” he told the Longford Leader on Monday afternoon, “and we’re still actively seeking buyers.”
He also noted that Longford County Council elected members have unanimously stated that the Greyhound Track would remain a recreational site and not be rezoned for housing or any other purpose.
Local councillors and TDs have made clear their stance that the greyhound track would not be rezoned for housing or anything other than a recreational site.
